Two Victims Identified in Brown University Shooting as Police Continue Hunt for Gunman.
Two students who were killed in the weekend's tragic incident in Providence were being remembered Monday – while an intensive search for their assailant carried on following the release by authorities in Rhode Island of the single suspect questioned in the case.
Tributes for Ella Cook
The young woman Ella Cook, a second-year student from Alabama, was called “an amazing, stable, pious, radiant soul”, according to the Advent Cathedral in Birmingham, which offered condolences for her at a service on Sunday.
She served as the vice-presidency of Brown’s branch of College Republicans of America, as the club stated. Karoline Leavitt also expressed sympathies publicly, saying in part: “It's indescribable. Remembering her loved ones and companions, particularly her mother and father.”
The Second Victim
The other deceased individual was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, from Uzbekistan in his initial year at the Ivy League university, his family confirmed.
Umurzokov’s identity was verified by Uzbekistan’s foreign ministry.
“He possessed remarkable kindness, humor, and intelligence. He had big dreams of pursuing a career in neurosurgery and assisting patients,” his sibling Samira said in a memorial statement.
The Shooting Incident
Nine more persons were injured in Saturday’s attack in the engineering department of Brown’s campus in Providence, during the institution's end-of-term tests.
Authorities said on Sunday evening that a 24-year-man arrested in a police operation at a hotel about approximately 17 miles from the campus earlier in the day was set to be freed.
“A perpetrator remains free,” declared Peter Neronha, Peter Neronha.
He added, “Occasionally a probe goes down a path, and then you need to change course and go in another, and this is precisely what occurred over the last 24 hours or so.”
Ongoing Concerns
The city's mayor, Brett Smiley, admitted: “It is expected to provoke renewed concern for our city”.
The assailant began shooting inside a classroom in the engineering facility on over the weekend, shooting over four dozen bullets from a 9mm handgun, a authority informed the Associated Press.
Officers that searched the lodging found two handguns and magazines when the suspect was arrested, the news agency reported.
Condition of the Injured
Of the nine hurt, one student was allowed to go home, mentioned Christina Paxson, Christina Paxson. Seven others were in grave but unchanging health, and one remained in critical care, officials reported on Sunday.
Durham Academy, a private academy in the city of Durham, said Kendall Turner, Kendall Turner, was in the group of seriously hurt victims.
Further Tributes
Tributes were paid to Cook at a religious service in Birmingham on Sunday. A pastor commented, “She was an incredible, grounded, faithful bright light not only in her youth... but at Brown she was a shining example in that specific location as well.”
A group leader, Martin Bertao, shared a message from the organization. “Ella was recognized for her fearless, heroic, and gentle spirit as she served her chapter and other students,” he said.
The US ambassador, Jonathan Henick, said he was “deeply saddened” by the passing of Umurzokov in a message. “We offer our heartfelt sympathies to the Umurzokov family, companions, and fellow students and grieve for of his promising future.”
Wider Picture
The weekend's murders at Brown, the seventh oldest in the US college with about 7,300 undergraduate and three thousand graduate students, happened during one of at least nearly 400 mass shootings reported in the US so far in 2025, according to records. Monday was the 349th day of the year.
