Astronaut Reveals Mental Health Struggle In the Wake of Wave of Online Abuse After Historic Trip

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after enduring a massive wave of online abuse in the wake of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also carried celebrity crewmates.

The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a online statement, referring to a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the flight.

She characterized the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Buried Under Misogyny

The researcher, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and conducted tests during the flight, said everything she had worked for – from her lab work and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her background – was buried under the tide of gendered attacks.

She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.

Finding Solid Ground

Now, eight months after reaching space, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the supporters whose support helped save her. “You were my salvation,” she wrote.

She noted that amid the criticism, considerable good had resulted from the mission, including elevated attention for her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

Flight Details

The self-operating spacecraft launched from its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that crossed the edge of outer space.

The diverse crew also comprised accomplished professionals from different industries.

The venture behind the mission is a private space firm launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
